On Friday, February 14th, we hosted a walk audit on Lovejoy Road in the Sanborn School area. Participants from the neighborhood joined town staff, MA Safe Routes To School, Merrimack Valley Planning Comission, and APD to survey the conditions for residents on foot and brainstorm traffic calming solutions to improve pedestrian safety.
As of May 30th, new physical traffic calming has been installed on Lovejoy Rd in the area of Sanborn School. Big thank you to the Town of Andover, the DPW, and APD for their responsiveness to resident and advocate concerns about vehicle speeds and pedestrian safety.
Several months ago, we hosted a walk audit along this stretch of road to bring together stakeholders and brainstorm safety interventions, and we're so happy to see the town's investment in this process. The filled bike rack at Sanborn is why this work is so important.
This installation, using permanently mounted flex posts narrows the travel lanes in the area of the crosswalk and capitalizes on drivers "discomfort" to reflexively slow down.
IT WORKS. Lots of brake lights as drivers approach the crosswalk. And before you ask, we confirmed that there's no issue with large landscape trucks or utility vehicles.
We look forward to continued investment in physical traffic calming on Lovejoy Rd and throughout town. Have a particular road or intersection of concern? Let us know!
